The Trunk – Elephant Park Community Hub
Dear PCC Members,
A mission opportunity has arisen in the Elephant and Castle area that will allow our churches in the deanery to respond to the new residents who have moved in there. It involves the new development around The Trunk , Elephant Park Community Hub and will allow us to provide a welcoming, supportive, educational and creative environment to the young and professional demographic looking to make the redevelopment their home.
The list of activities include, interfaith book clubs, arts based spiritual exploration, supper clubs, youth groups for Latinos, messy churches, art exhibitions, tutoring for children and young people, and many more. The parishes involved are Camberwell St Michael, Newington St Mary, Newington St Paul, Southwark St Matthew, Southwark St George, Walworth St Christopher and Walworth St Peter.
The money is coming from the Woolwich Episcopal Trust’s All Churches Mission Fund for 2021 which is experiencing an underspend for this year. If we don’t use this money, we will lose it. It represents an opportunity for our group of parishes to work together and will not affect any funding required for our individual parish mission plans outside of this group church initiative.
Fr Jonathan Roberts, the new Acting Area Dean for the Southwark and Newington Deanery, and Fr Jonathan Sedgwick the Acting Archdeacon are appealing to the PCCs of the these parishes to read through the application (attached) and approve it for this weekend so we are able to make the deadline and respond to this wonderful mission opportunity.
With all best wishes
Lay Chair, Southwark and Newington Deanery
One of London’s large redevelopment projects is happening at the Elephant and Castle in the
middle of our Deanery. What was the Heygate has been demolished and mostly rebuilt. The
Elephant and Castle shopping centre has been demolished and is about to be rebuilt. Allied to
this are redevelopments between Walworth High Street and the Thameslink railway from the
Elephant to Camberwell Green, and there is more work going on along Albany Road on the north
side of Burgess Park. People are moving in in their thousands and the population is changing
Our Deanery has worked on some small projects over the last few Christmases to reach out to
new residents. We now want to set out something more systematic and regular based in the
heart of the Elephant Park site in a building intended for community use.
We have been asked by Lend Lease (the developer) to propose a programme to build community.
We have worked together to make some proposals which include parish work and other wider
organisations who are willing to join with us. It’s a promising partnership to express the kingdom.
